    "Intuitive" means not having to scroll through menus on a screen while you're driving, and putting yourself and your passengers at risk But keeping your eyes on the road and your hands on on the steering wheel Because you know (without taking your eyes off the road) Which button does exactly what you need

    I disagree, nothing innovative , Tesla was forced to put the seats and frames on top of battery, in unibody car makes more sense for painting and priming to dip the entire vehicle assembly, but these guys get money from Tesla and get free vehicles, so here we go.

    If a cell manufacturer was also made responsible for designing and building the pack I wonder if they would still use round cells over pouch or prismatic given the added complication of designing a pack? To me the round cell concept is much like one engineering group taking the easiest approach for themselves without any consideration of the overall application. Using serpentine cooling strips seems like a nightmare design for high volume production, nevermind safely connecting all those small cells together. And filling the pack with unpredictable expanding foam is a terrible idea in a production environment. One small change I've noticed in one of Hyundai/Kia newer battery pack designs is to using larger pouch cells to eliminate having 3 in parallel, now 96 cells in total instead of 294. Cell balancing is improved because 2 cells can't support a lagging third. And repairability of packs must become a required feature eventually.

    Battery cooling is a nightmare, so I'm glad my 215 mile range '22 Nissan Leaf has no battery cooling. They are proven, last a long time, and you don't have to worry about coolant leaks inside, clogging small passages, pumps failing, maintenance, etc. .... Wow, the Leaf does not seem to need cooling, although some fast-charging has to be limited a bit, that causes other (and NIssan's newer Ariya) to get horrible liquid cooling.

    really excellent discussion! I liked that you were able to mix in basic explanations of phenomena while still diving deeper and using precise terminology where appropriate. I’m not an aspiring engineer but I have to imagine that it’s immensely valuable to anyone who is to have a chance to hear the lingo and use it as a jumping off point for deeper study.

    How about making a true structural "honeycomb" with cooling passages almost completely surrounding each cylinder, plus one-end cooling. Electrically isolate the cells within the cylinders, and have terminal connections at the same end for all cells. It would be possible to pressure and structurally test the honeycomb before cell insertion, and with some imagination many cooling paths are possible, as well as future cell replacement. The same concept would work for biaxially-symmetric prismatic cell assemblies (maybe solid-state cells). We'll never get to reasonable weight EVs until we start building proper structural battery packs, and since the necessary machining and welding technology is already available, why dally?

    7:00 The ethernet loop is doubled, but honestly, is pretty useless being doubled in this case, considering its flat wire running side by side, meaning if one gets cut or damaged for any reason, the likelihood of the other getting damaged too is very high.

      Also, 7:50 calling it "triple redundant system" is at the same level as Tesla bullshit. Having 3 sensors doesn't make it triple redundant, its double as the most important devices are the steering motors.

    I invested in multiple projects on Indiegogo and Kickstarter. I only had one not yield and had about 20 yield. Many people do mich worse than I have done and am proud of my track record. If any entrepreneur wants to pay me to advise them, make me an offer. I have invested via Startengine and Wedunder and so far all are still going concerns. None have failed yet. I could assign a risk of failure to each and every one.

    Fantastic presentation- thanks Tom! Does serviceability of packs and cells ever enter the design consideration? I can’t imagine what it would be like trying to pry one or two cells out of any of those packs if they went bad. The literature on my MiniCooper SE refers to a modular design to aid in service but I would doubt they mean right down to the cell level that you could pop out like the battery in your tv remote.

    I was hoping for a stainless steel truck, not a candy shell. The shape is cool, as well as all the advancements in design and engineering. But the Cybertruck is not what I need. I'll be waiting for an Aptera. Hopefully it can ford 8 inches of water without motor damage or floating away, as I have to cross a creek to get to my house. Otherwise my F150 will have to do until batteries cease to be the bottleneck.

    Likes: - sleek stainless finish - looks very neat and clean - the interior is very easy to clean - seats wont collect dusts and mites - the flooring is easy to wipe - the back compartment that has roll-up cover is awesome (although roll-ups gets stuck sometimes) - very wide view of the road - and of course, computer controlled mechanism plus internet is awesome Dislikes: - the saw line at the artificial suede (dashboard) will get scratched and fade after a while and it wont look good. - the steering wheel looks "small and very low" . it wont even give me any sense of security when i'm about to crash. we have a tendency to push hard on the steering wheel to lessen our impact on the dashboard when those times happen (pre-airbag inflation) and it helps a lot. - the fixed head rest is bad because humans come in different shape, size, and form. - ceiling is too low - doesn't look like there's enough space for the legs to stretch (front seats) - sun visor seems useless - did he mention plastic smell? i hate that. whatever happened to "new car smell"? - glass roof (and very wide windshield), not good at countries with so much sunlight - the stainless quality looks easy to scratch. what percentage of stainless is it? - no Keyhole at the door? should have Manual controls as well (in case of emergency) - should come with Manual Drive too i haven't seen the Engine and under part yet.

    I had to fix the pack on a 2018 Volt and it definitely had cold plates full of antifreeze between every couple batts. It has supe stable temperature but it does look somewhat expensive.

    Thermal management of the battery cells is even more important when it comes to cooling while quick charging as well as preheating, and also when you like to maximize the lifespan of the cells.
